- Rockin’ Patent: US Patent No. 512,340
- Filed: 7 July 1893
- In the name of: Nikola Tesla
- Title: Coil For Electro-magnets
- What’s claimed: “A coil for electric apparatus the adjacent convolutions of which form parts of the circuit between which there exists a potential difference sufficient to secure in the coil a capacity capable of neutralizing its self-induction, as hereinbefore described.”
- Why this patent rocks: This patent appears to be for the Tesla coil. The coil can be modified to become what is known as the “singing Tesla coil” or “Zuesaphone.” It can be altered so the electrical output can be manipulated by software or MIDI instrument, allowing players to control the tones emitted and create a synthesiser-like sound.
