Rockin’ Patent – “Electrical Musical Instrument”

  • Rockin’ Patent®: US Patent No. 1,956,350
  • Filed: 19 January 1934
  • In the name of: Laurens Hammond
  • Title: Electrical Musical Instrument
  • What’s claimed: “In an electrical musical instrument in which alternating current is used to produce musical tones, a manual including a number of different keys, a set of switches operated by each key, a plurality of sources of alternating current, and electrical connections from each of said sources to said switches, such that switches of different sets are connected to a single one of said sources.”
  • Why this patent rocks: This patent appears to relate to the Hammond Organ (see Wikipedia page here).  The patent itself is a fascinating read to understand the science and theory behind the organ.  It’s also interesting seeing the amount of detail in the drawings (e.g. Figs. 1 and 2 above).
